Atlanta attorney Lin Wood is demanding presidential candidate Joe Biden retract a reference to Kyle Rittenhouse as a white supremacist.
So far, no word from the Biden campaign, and a request for comment was not immediately answered.
Rittenhouse is the teenager charged with the death of two men during riots in Kenosha, Wisc. in August following the police-involved shooting death of city resident Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse’s supporters have claimed he acted in self-defense and was on site to help residents protect their businesses. But critics portray Rittenhouse as a white supremacist militia member.
The immediate controversy arose after Tuesday night’s presidential debate. An image of Rittenhouse was featured in a Biden campaign political ad about white supremacy. The video was tweeted out on Biden’s Twitter account with text reading: “There’s no other way to put it: the President of the United States refused to disavow white supremacists on the debate stage last night.”
Wood, who is defending Rittenhouse, tweeted out a response that read:
“Formal demand for public retraction is being prepared for Biden/Harris Campaign on behalf of Kyle Rittenhouse. I also hereby demand that @JoeBiden immediately retract his false accusation that Kyle is a white supremacist & militia member responsible for violence in Kenosha.”
Wood also represents Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann, who was falsely portrayed in the media as being confrontational with a Native American protester. CNN and the Washington Post settled defamation claims in that case.
Wood also successfully represented Richard Jewell, the security guard that the FBI falsely accused in the Atlanta Olympic bombing in 1996. In reality, Jewell had moved people away from the suspicious backpack before it exploded.
