You know what the world needs more of? Politics. Permeating every pore of society.
To assist with that, toymaker Mattel’s unveiled a new collection of dolls.
As reported by The Los Angeles Times, the brand-spanking politically-active Barbie set includes a black woman running for office accompanied by an all-female campaign staff — plus one person who’s voted for her.
After all, what 7-year-old girl doesn’t dream of the canvassing, polling, and other many stressors that go with an electoral campaign? And what kindergartener isn’t all about siding hard on issues the whole world viciously, bitterly, and endlessly fights about?
You know — childhood.
I remember being 5 years old — we’d put on ties over our onesies and enact scenes exactly like this in the play room:
What I wouldn’t give to go back to those carefree days of yore…
Thankfully, they’re still in play for the nation’s newest batch o’ babies.
As per a statement from the toy company to TMZ:
Barbie has always encouraged girls to stand up for what they believe in and shows them they can be anything. This doll set highlights a range of leadership roles to pique their interest in shaping the future and raise their voices – from the podium to the polls. This set also provides a tool to allow families to have conversations around important events and cultural moments through play.
“Always” may be a stretch. It seems to me that what Barbie, who was introduced in 1959, has “always” done is teach girls to be glamorous and do glamorous things — often with Ken, who was welcomed as her man in 1961:
This is whatcha call a transformation:
Nothing at all wrong with that, but Donald Trump Jr. pulled a slick one on Twitter:
That prompted the statement to TMZ, which also clarified something you may be wondering:
Barbie is not, and has never been, affiliated with a political party.
So maybe that’s Condaleeza Rice, Kennedy, and Ivanka Trump?
Stay tuned for more political Barbies, which may or may not include the following:
